Itchy Skin Care

Itchy Skin Care
By Hemanth Balaji

Getting Itchy skin can be a real hassle. There are actually a lot of different causes of itchy skin. Some of these can be pretty serious, while other causes bring about symptoms that go away after a while.

Itchy skin is usually the result of an irritant coming in contact with your skin. Sometimes, not rinsing your clothes well enough after washing can lead to itchy skin, as detergent can be an irritant. Usually, this type of itchy skin is relieved just by removing it from contact with the irritant, once identified. Some itching may remain, but it will be gone after a while.

Of course, there are allergens which are irritants of a more vicious kind. If you've touched poison ivy or poison oak, then you know removal of the irritant is not enough for cases like this.

In cases that the allergen affected you through skin contact, some calamine lotion might help, as this neutralizes most irritants and can relieve itchy skin fairly quickly. If the lotion does not work, you might want to consult a dermatologist or a physician to check out the nature of the skin irritation and to help you get some treatment.

There are also cases when the allergen is ingested or consumed. In this case, itchy skin could come with other symptoms like inflammation and a feeling of constriction. If this occurs, the best thing for you to do would get some antihistamines and consult a physician right away. Itchy skin in this case can be an indication of more serious symptoms about to develop and immediate medical attention is definitely required.

Itchy skin might also be the result of a poor lifestyle. Not changing your bed sheets regularly could cause various bacteria, fungi and even insects to move in and start irritating your skin. Make sure you clean out your bedroom and disinfect regularly to remove any irritants present.

Skin disorders also commonly cause itchy skin. When your itchy skin comes with rashes and lasts for more than a couple of weeks, then you should go to a dermatologist to have your skin tested for any disorders. This will help you get the right treatment and will lessen the risk of you aggravating the condition.

Also, if your itchy skin is not relieved the first time you scratch it, scratching a second time will not help. Scratching can actually aggravate itchy skin, either by spreading the irritant to skin around the itchy area or by causing the skin to break, leaving with you a wound as well as itchy skin.

Hopefully, this short article will help you understand the underlying causes of itchy skin and the various steps you can take to get relief without excessive scratching.

Causes of Dry Itchy Skin

Causes of Dry Itchy Skin - Why do I Have Itchy Skin?
By Jerrick Foo

Dry itchy skin is an aggravating condition. Heating systems dry out the air in our homes and offices, which in turn depletes the moisture in our skin. This is why dry itchy skin is more prevalent in the winter months.

Certain medical conditions can cause dry itchy skin, too. Four of these are dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and seborrhea.

Dry Itchy Skin #1 – Dermatitis

Dermatitis refers to an itchy skin condition caused by contact to a substance you are allergic to. Poison ivy is an obvious example. Laundry detergents could be another one that gives rise to dry itchy skin. Unless you know what causes dermatitis, you may want to conduct a patch test to know what allergens actually cause your skin to be itchy.

Dry Itchy Skin #2 – Eczema

No one knows why eczema happens and no cure has yet been found. It is a kind of itchy rash that makes your skin oozes or weeps. It is sometimes associated with dry skin. Children sometimes have this condition.

Dry Itchy Skin #3 – Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease, which means it's a condition that is caused by the body's immune system getting mixed up and attacking the body itself. The itching of psoriasis is maddening, as anyone who has the condition can tell you. It is also a frustrating condition because it causes unsightly patches all over you. Psoriasis can be aggravated by being nervous.

Dry Itchy Skin #4 – Seborrheah

Seborrheah, which is characterized by flaking and redness, sometimes develops after a hospital stay. It is often found on the face or in folds of skin. Seborrheah dermatitis can affect your scalp areas as well, and is often a mistaken for dandruff at times.

Relieve Dry Itchy Damaged Skin Fast Naturally

Relieve Dry Itchy Damaged Skin Fast Naturally

The use of natural or synthetic cosmetics to cover the condition of the skin is common among many cultures. Xeroderma, the medical name for dry skin, occurs most commonly on the lower legs, arms, the sides of the abdomen and thighs and is a very common condition.

Skin contains hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, apocrine glands and blood vessels. The dermis is structurally divided into two areas: a superficial area adjacent to the epidermis, called the papillary region, and a deep thicker area known as the reticular region. The average square inch of skin holds 650 sweat glands, 20 blood vessels, 60,000 melanocytes, and more than a thousand nerve endings.

If you break out on the skin around your eyes, it could be the shellac in your mascara; buy a shellac-free mascara like Ecco Bella's. Nutritional deficiencies, especially deficiencies of vitamin A and the B vitamins, can also contribute to dry skin or result in a chronic dry skin condition that's not relieved by anything else. Serious skin complications, including a dry skin condition, can arise for people with type 2 diabetes.

Dry skin happens more often in the winter when the cold air outside and heated air inside cause the humidity to be low. When the oil glands do not supply enough lubrication to the skin, the skin becomes dehydrated. Forced-air furnaces may make skin even drier than it already is.

Consider taking cod liver oil or fish oil supplements, in liquid form, every day. The two most common problems that affect your skin are: not drinking enough water and not eating enough fiber. I put two tablespoons of coconut oil in my smoothies, which are made with fruits only - using a base of two bananas, then adding fruit, frozen or fresh-- blend well.

If you use moisturizers, use the thick, oily-type which work better for dry skin. Avoid all products that have an alcohol base. For any skin condition, it's always better to take a natural approach.

Apply coconut oil to irritated or chapped lips as well; it's edible, so it's safe and so healing to the lips. Use coconut oil to remove your make-up at night, like I do; it leaves a fine layer of oil to nourish your skin all night long; but better yet, apply more coconut oil. Use a thin layer of coconut oil under your make-up, if you wear it, to moisturize and soften your skin throughout the day.

Apply coconut oil daily to your skin to heal, moisturize and soothe it. Coconut oil is very inexpensive - a great, cheap home remedy for all skin conditions.

Skin that's not clean favors the development of pathogenic organisms; the dead cells continually slough off of the epidermis and mix with the secretions of the sweat and sebaceous glands and the dust found on the skin, to form a layer on its surface. The skin is subject to constant attack from without; it can be affected by many conditions, diseases and ailments.

Following some of the above treatments, your dry skin should be well on its way to recovery. You should see the results with improved skin within a few days following using these dry skin tips and suggestions. If you're still worried about your skin, or the problems persist, see your skin doctor.
